A Day on Venus Is Longer Than Its Year: The Slow Retrograde Rotation of Sol's Hottest Planet

In our solar system, time behaves in counterintuitive ways. Venus presents one of the most intriguing planetary anomalies: its day is significantly longer than its year. A single rotation of Venus on its axis takes approximately 243 Earth days, making it the slowest spinning planet in the solar system. By contrast, Venus completes a full revolution around the Sun in just under 225 Earth days. Consequently, a planetary day on Venus lasts roughly 18 Earth days longer than its planetary year. Adding to this celestial peculiarity, Venus exhibits retrograde rotation. While most planets spin counterclockwise on their axes, Venus rotates clockwise. This means that if an observer could stand on the surface beneath its dense carbon dioxide atmosphere, the Sun would rise in the west and set in the east. Scientists hypothesize that a major collision with a massive protoplanet early in the solar system's history—combined with strong atmospheric tidal forces—may have flipped Venus's axis or dramatically slowed its original motion.
